PwC’s June 2022 Global Consumer Insights Pulse Survey shows that Canadians’ food shopping habits have been forever changed by the pandemic. Here are some key findings:

  • Canadians are adapting to supply chain disruptions and inflation by using technology to: use comparison sites to look for product availability (29%), to switch to buying online (25%), to shop at different retailers (35%), to switch to buying in-store (27%), and to change the location they usually shop in order to get the product they want (24%).
  • One in three respondents have used a virtual reality (VR) channel to shop, with most buying retail products and luxury goods.
  • 35% of Canadians say a company’s social policies and actions often or always influence their purchasing behaviour, while 34% sight their governance policies, and 28% sight their environmental policies and actions.
  • 75% of Canadians say they’d be prepared to pay more for locally sourced products, and 66% say they’d pay more for made-in-Canada products.
  • 51% of consumers shop online at least once a month on a personal computer, down from 56% in April 2021.
