Farm Credit Canada (FCC) has released its 2023 Food and Beverage Report, covering the food and beverage industry’s key economic indicators for 2022. Here are a few highlights: 

  • Due to a combination of inflationary pressures, higher costs and a tighter labour market, food and beverage manufacturing gross margins as a per cent of sales fell to the lowest level in 20 years. Margins are expected to rise slightly in 2023. 

  • Retail food prices increased 8.9% year-over-year, the fastest increase since 1981. 

  • Food and beverage manufacturing sales increased 10.6% year-over-year in 2022, while foodservice sales rose approximately 27%, and retail grocery sales grew 2%.
