Something to Celebrate

December 15, 2022 is National Tea Day! According to the Tea & Herbal Association of Canada, Canadians drink eight cups of tea annually on a per capita basis, and 55% of consumers drink at least one cup per week. Each year $349 million worth of tea is sold in grocery stores across the country. Almost half of consumers (48%) say they prefer black tea, with Darjeeling, Assam and Ceylon mentioned as the most popular varieties.

Food Facts

According to Nourish Food Marketing’s 2023 Trend Report: The Future is Transformative, Canadians are eating less meat and adding more plant-based foods for many reasons, including climate change, animal welfare issues, affordability, and a desire for more sustainable food choices. Citing Mintel statistics, Nourish found that among global consumers:

  • 33% of consumers considered themselves carnivores in 2021, compared to 28% in 2022.
  • 49% said they were omnivores in 2021, compared to 51% in 2022.
  • 10% considered themselves to be flexitarian in 2021, compared to 13% in 2022.
  • The number of consumers who considered themselves pescatarians, vegetarians and vegans in 2021 were 2%, 3% and 1% respectively. Those numbers didn’t change in 2022.
