Something to Celebrate
December 6, 2022 is National Microwave Oven Day! Based on radar technology developed during World War II, the microwave oven was invented in 1945 by Percy Spencer of Raytheon, who realized foods could be heated with microwaves through use of a magnetron. The first Raytheon Radarange microwave was released in 1947 was a six-ft. tall unit with a $5,000 price tag. While early machines were intended for restaurant and airline use, the first residential microwaves appeared on the market in 1955. But it wasn’t until the late 1990s that most Canadian homes had a microwave oven.
