A June 2022 report from Food Banks Canada revealed that more Canadians are facing hunger and food insecurity due to rising food and housing costs. Here are some of the highlights: 

  • 23% of Canadians polled say they are eating less than they think they should because they don’t have enough money for food. 
  • One in five Canadians reported going hungry at least once in the past two years. 
  • One in three Canadians earning less than $50,000 a year reported not having enough money for food in the past two years. 
  • Food banks across Canada are seeing an increase, up to 25% in some regions, in Canadians visiting a food bank for the first time. 
  • 61% of Canadians see housing costs as the largest financial obstacle preventing consumers from affording food.
