October 17 is National Pasta Day! Pasta is thought have been made as early as the fifth century, and by the later 13th century it was a staple across the Italian Peninsula. Because there are so many regional varieties, estimates of the number of pastas out there range from 350 to more than 600 different shapes and sizes. According to Share the Pasta, the average North American eats approximately 20 lbs of pasta annually.
Food Facts
A poll by the Restaurant Marketing Agency on pasta preferences found:
- 75% of people surveyed eat pasta at least once a week, and one in 20 say they eat pasta every day.
- 2.8% of people say they never eat pasta.
- 51.95% of respondents say they prefer red sauce (marinara or Bolognese), 43.72% prefer white sauce (alfredo), and 4.32% prefer green sauce (pesto).
- 25% of people say spaghetti is their favourite type of pasta.
